Abstract

The research conducted and displayed on this portfolio is for my senior Sociology Capstone at Gettysburg College. Choosing a topic to rigorously analyze for a semester’s length initially seemed intimidating. Professor Hays instituted no limitations as to what topic we could academically explore. However, with COVID being such a prominent topic of conversation and a global affair, I felt that it was only fitting that I further investigate this pandemic. Obviously, being a college student my academic experience has been anything but ordinary during this unforeseen era of time.

Using a sociological lens, what I’ve been able to identify clearly from this pandemic is human behavior and the way in which people have responded to the Coronavirus. I noticed that on a local level, people came together. Communities joined forces, organized food drives, aided small businesses, and virtually connected. Yet, on a more national level, COVID was tackled in a completely different fashion. It was not a unified American approach, it was an every man, every state for itself route. I found this to be heartbreaking, but also incredibly intriguing. I wanted to know why our country, why American the great, America the strongest nation in the world could not become one and undertake this virus. Moreover, it became a matter of politics and not public health.  Overall my portfolio delves into this nation wide dichotomy while analyzing political jargon surrounding COVID.
